Chinatown Movie Review

chinatown movie review

A la fois languissant et finalement grotesque, Chinatown s'avère en conséquence de quoi un fort mauvais polar que même ses acteurs ne parviennent pas à sauver. That dinner scene between Noah and Jake is quite something. Jake makes an excellent job of playing the role of a whistleblower who against all the odds and in line with his moral values, goes out of his way to unearth some of the darkest and dangerous forms of moral decadence that control and destroy the lives and livelihoods of many people in Los Angeles. Approach To The Inmost Cave So, Jake's solved most of the water-theft issue—but the exact nature of Hollis's death remains mysterious. Over lunch at his personal club, Cross warns Gittes that he does not understand the forces at work, and offers to double Gittes' fee to search for Mulwray's missing mistress. Nicholson doesn't over-step his bounds in any scene, finding the right notes in suggestive conversations. The set pieces are beautiful, the score is compelling; and camera-work and editing could not be any better.

Gittes follows Evelyn's car to a house, where he spies her through the windows comforting Mulwray's mistress, Katherine. His continued investigation brings him closer to the real Evelyn as well as into real danger as he learns the truth about Water and Power's activities which could make some people very rich at the expense of other, poorer, people. All we wants to do is find the truth and move on, but that seems impossible to do with all the lies and murder. But when you live in a desert community in California, the need for water can become desperate, especially when you consider that, in Chinatown, L. Speaking of cult classics, Chinatown was on top of my list to watch next, because I heard nothing but amazing things about this movie and after watching it I can agree that this movie was outstanding. And that, in a word, sucks.

What can you buy that you can't already afford? In the early scenes, the movie introduces the audience to the moral conflicts emanating from working within the system, and that also unveils the main character's role. And where does he stand with Evelyn Mulwray, played by Dunaway as a cool, elegant woman who sometimes--especially when her father is mentioned -- seems fragile as china? John Huston showing he was as good an actor as he was a director. The year 1974 was very memorable. When she tries to flee the scene, the cops gun her down. It's an intelligent mystery, complex yet relatively easy to follow, and has no difficulty in holding your attention from start to finish.

We don't actually see any prolonged interaction between Jake the Chinese population. If you think about it, the incest reflects the same sort of crime as the water theft, except on a personal level. Consider the output of influential film makers Allen during that time: Coppola, Scorsese, Altman, Lumet, Ashby, Bogdanovich, to name a few Americans, not to mention European directors Fellini, Bergman, Wertmuller, Truffaut, Argento, Saura, and Bunuel -- all household names in those days. It retains the inner darkness of the genre, while depicting a sun-drenched California landscape in living color—not the black and white palette of old school film noirs. Gitties is hired by Evelyn Mulwray Faye Dunaway to investigate into an extra-martial affair she believes her husband is having. The tone was set by Dashiel Hammett, and its greatest practitioner was. This is a great movie, which should be seen by just about anyone who can take it it's more than just casually adult in nature, even though there's not that much violence or sex in it.

This movie is a complex series of events surrounding the control of water and that people can die over this issue. Chinatown appears to be the place where everything goes wrong for the good guy. The film was intended to be the first of a trilogy, about the water company, gas company, and a freeway project respectively. . It's a healthy, pretty place—it's La-La Land.

It's also a state of affairs in which it's impossible to comprehend what's going on. Hollis Mulwray wanted to make sure that the water would be publicly owned, but Noah Cross, his dastardly partner, wanted to continue to own the water company privately—that way, he'd be able to make a profit and, maybe more importantly, maintain power and control over the city via the water supply. With the retirement home Noah Cross is using to mask his water theft scheme, we see the same thing in process—on the surface, it looks like a peaceful old folks' home, but it's actually being manipulated to serve the forces of greed. Gittes falls in love with her, but he can't take her sneaky lies. It is a superb example of film making, certainly among the 20 best movies I have ever seen. Even though Jake's realized the truth about what's happening, he's too late—and the cops are too unwilling to give him a fair hearing. Jake drives into the Valley, where a farmer confesses that, rather than secretly irrigating the farm, officials from the city regularly come in to poison his water and blow up his tanks.

. The event effectively ended Mulholland's career. Certainly the wrong people are alive and dead at the end of the film, but I am not sure Polanski was wrong. This film was directed by Roman Polanski, before he was extradited to Europe and could only make films there. Needless to say, things are very dark and the script is convincingly dark and miserable, leading to an ending that is as depressing as I've seen – not so much in what actually happens but also in the wider implications for the characters that the credits prevent us from seeing. How much better can you eat? Her father is stealing the city's water, and he's had a child with her through incest. And the man who designed that dam, William Mulholland, had a name very similar to Hollis Mulwray.
